A collection of lace classification, [ca. 1906].

This album is probably the first version of Johnstone's lace classification. It was given a penciled title page when transferred to the Library by the Catalog Department of the Museum, Jan. 21, 1948. The album is organized according to a scheme of 21 classes and various subclasses. Classification designations and descriptions are written in Johnstone's hand on cutout sheets of paper affixed to pages in the album. Autograph, typescript, and printed catalog entries for items acquired by, or on loan to, the Metropolitan Museum of Art are on cutout slips of paper affixed beneath the classification section to which they belong. Some classes are not represented by any catalog entries, and the entries following class XXI B (p. 121-139) are not designated by class.
